A crate is not a cage โ it's a safe, personal space for your dog. When introduced correctly, most dogs choose to nap in their crate voluntarily.
Why Crate Training Works
Dogs are den animals by nature. A properly sized crate mimics the safe, enclosed feeling of a den. It helps with house training, prevents destructive behaviour, and gives your dog a retreat when overwhelmed.
Choosing the Right Size
The crate should be just big enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down. Too large and they'll use one end as a toilet.
Place the crate open in a busy room. Toss treats inside. Let your puppy explore on their own โ no forcing.
Feed all meals just inside the crate door, then gradually move the bowl further inside.
Close the door for 5โ10 minutes while you sit nearby. Gradually extend to 30 minutes.
Work up to 1โ2 hours. Always ignore whining โ only open when they're quiet.
Never use the crate as punishment. Never leave a puppy under 6 months in a crate for more than 2โ3 hours during the day.
