All dogs bark β it's normal. But excessive barking is stressful for everyone. The solution is to understand and address the cause.
Why Dogs Bark Excessively
- Alert barking (doorbell, strangers, sounds)
- Attention-seeking barking
- Boredom and under-stimulation
- Separation anxiety
- Fear or territorial behaviour
01
Let them bark, then say 'Quiet'
When your dog barks, calmly say 'Quiet' once in a firm voice. Shouting sounds like you're joining in.
02
Wait for silence
Even a 2-second pause counts. Immediately reward with a treat and praise.
03
Increase the quiet time
Gradually require longer periods of silence before rewarding. Build from 2 seconds to 5, then 10, then 30.
04
Practice with controlled triggers
Ring the doorbell yourself β practise the trigger in a controlled setting.

Exercise First
A tired dog barks less. Before leaving your dog alone, give them 30+ minutes of active exercise.
