Dogs can't tell us when something is wrong. But their bodies give clear signals โ€” if you know what to look for.

The 10 Warning Signs

01
Sudden Loss of Appetite (24+ hours)

Missing one meal is often nothing. Two or more meals refused warrants a call to your vet.

02
Excessive Thirst or Urination

Can signal diabetes, kidney disease, or Cushing's disease โ€” all treatable when caught early.

03
Persistent Vomiting or Diarrhoea

Vomiting more than twice in 24 hours, or diarrhoea with blood, needs veterinary attention.

04
Unexplained Weight Loss

Can indicate cancer, diabetes, parasites, or organ disease.

05
Breathing Difficulties

Any laboured breathing or blue/grey gums is an emergency.

06
Limping or Mobility Changes

Persistent limping should be evaluated promptly.

07
Lumps or Bumps

Not all lumps are cancerous, but all new lumps should be examined.

08
Eye or Ear Discharge

Persistent or coloured discharge indicates infection or injury.

09
Extreme Lethargy

A dog who won't get up for food or play for more than a day needs to be seen.

10
Sudden Behavioural Changes

Sudden aggression or disorientation can indicate pain or toxin ingestion.

When in Doubt, Call

Most vets are happy to do a quick phone consultation. If something feels wrong, call rather than wait.
