Dogs can't tell us when something is wrong. But their bodies give clear signals โ if you know what to look for.
The 10 Warning Signs
Missing one meal is often nothing. Two or more meals refused warrants a call to your vet.
Can signal diabetes, kidney disease, or Cushing's disease โ all treatable when caught early.
Vomiting more than twice in 24 hours, or diarrhoea with blood, needs veterinary attention.
Can indicate cancer, diabetes, parasites, or organ disease.
Any laboured breathing or blue/grey gums is an emergency.
Persistent limping should be evaluated promptly.
Not all lumps are cancerous, but all new lumps should be examined.
Persistent or coloured discharge indicates infection or injury.
A dog who won't get up for food or play for more than a day needs to be seen.
Sudden aggression or disorientation can indicate pain or toxin ingestion.
Most vets are happy to do a quick phone consultation. If something feels wrong, call rather than wait.
