Bringing a new puppy home is one of life's greatest joys. With the right positive approach, your puppy can learn the basics in just 30 days.
Why Positive Reinforcement Works
Puppies learn by association. When a behaviour produces something great โ a treat, praise, play โ they repeat it. Positive reinforcement is faster, kinder, and builds a stronger bond than punishment-based methods.
Always reward within 2 seconds of the correct behaviour. After that window, your puppy can't connect the reward to the action.
Week 1: The Three Foundation Commands
Hold a treat close to your puppy's nose, slowly move your hand up. As their head follows, their bottom lowers. The moment they sit, say 'Sit', reward and praise. Repeat 5 times per session, 3 times daily.
Ask your puppy to sit. Open your palm toward them and say 'Stay'. Take one step back, return, reward if they stayed. Gradually increase distance over several days.
Crouch down, say 'Come' in a happy voice, open your arms. When they reach you, give the biggest reward of the session โ this command can save their life.
Week 2: Loose Leash Walking
Start indoors. When your puppy walks beside you without pulling, reward. The moment they pull, stop completely. Only move forward when the leash is loose.
Week 3: Crate Training
Make the crate inviting with a soft blanket and a toy. Feed meals inside with the door open. Gradually close the door for short periods while you're visible.
Never call your puppy to you for something unpleasant (baths, nail trims). It destroys the recall command.
Week 4: Proofing in New Environments
Practice every command in different locations with different distractions. A puppy who only knows 'sit' at home hasn't fully learned the command.
- Morning (5 min): Sit, Stay, Come review
- Afternoon (5 min): Current week's focus
- Evening (5 min): Fun session โ favourite tricks
- Always end on success and keep it joyful
