A beautiful aquarium doesn't happen by accident โ it requires the right setup, patience, and understanding of the nitrogen cycle.
Step 1: Choose the Right Tank Size
Bigger tanks are easier for beginners. A 60โ100 litre tank maintains stable water chemistry far more easily than a 10-litre bowl.
Step 2: Essential Equipment
- Filter: Essential. Size it for 1.5โ2x your tank volume.
- Heater: For tropical fish (26โ28ยฐC).
- Thermometer: Essential for monitoring temperature.
- Lighting: 8โ10 hours daily.
- Substrate: Gravel or sand โ rinse thoroughly.
- Water conditioner: Neutralises tap water chlorine instantly.
Step 3: The Nitrogen Cycle
Use liquid ammonia or hardy fish like danios. Ammonia rises, feeding the first bacteria colony.
After 1โ2 weeks, nitrite appears. Nitrite is also toxic โ no fish yet.
Nitrite drops, nitrate rises. A second bacteria colony processes the nitrite.
When ammonia=0 and nitrite=0 โ the tank is cycled. Now add fish, slowly.
Adding fish too soon, before the tank is cycled. The ammonia spike kills fish within days. 4โ6 weeks is not optional.
