Common Fish Diseases: How to Spot & Treat Them

Fish can't tell you they're sick. Learn to identify the most common fish illnesses early and treat them effectively.

Ich (White Spot Disease)

The most common fish disease. Looks like white grains of salt on the body and fins. Treatment: raise temperature to 28°C, add aquarium salt, use Ich treatment medication for 7–14 days.

Fin Rot

Fins appear ragged or have white/brown edges. Caused by bacterial infection, usually triggered by poor water quality. Treatment: 30% water change first, then antibacterial treatment.

Swim Bladder Disorder

Fish swims sideways, floats to the top, or sinks. Often caused by overfeeding. Treatment: fast the fish for 2–3 days, then offer a cooked, de-skinned pea.

Velvet

Fish appears coated in fine gold or rust-coloured dust. Treatment: darken the tank, raise temperature, use copper-based medication.
