Birds instinctively hide signs of illness until they can no longer do so. By the time a sick bird looks obviously ill, they may already be critically unwell.

01
Puffed-up feathers when not sleeping

Birds puff up to conserve heat when ill. A bird sitting puffed up during the day is usually unwell.

02
Sitting at the bottom of the cage

Healthy birds perch. A bird on the cage floor is a medical emergency.

03
Changes in droppings

Normal droppings have three parts: dark solid, white urates, clear liquid. Green or bloody droppings indicate illness.

04
Discharge from nostrils or eyes

Any discharge or crustiness around the eyes or nares indicates infection.

05
Tail bobbing while at rest

Rhythmic tail movement at rest indicates laboured breathing.

06
Loss of appetite

A bird not eating for more than 24 hours can deteriorate rapidly.

07
Sudden personality change

An unusually quiet bird or one that stops playing โ€” pay close attention.

08
Feather destruction or plucking

Sudden onset warrants a vet visit to rule out medical causes.

09
Clicking or wheezing sounds

Any respiratory noise beyond normal vocalisations indicates a problem.

10
Falling off the perch

Neurological symptoms require immediate veterinary attention.

Find an Avian Vet First

Not all vets are experienced with birds. Find an avian specialist in your area before you need one urgently.
