All parrots scream β it's normal communication. But excessive, non-stop screaming is one of the most common reasons people surrender pet birds.
Normal Screaming (Accept This)
- Contact calls β 'Where are you? I'm here!'
- Dawn and dusk screaming β 15 minutes is biologically normal
- Excitement when seeing you return home
Problem Screaming (Address This)
- Boredom and under-stimulation
- Insufficient out-of-cage time
- Attention-seeking (accidentally reinforced)
- Fear or perceived threat
- Illness or pain

What NOT to Do
Never yell back at a screaming bird β you're joining in the flock call. Never cover the cage while they're screaming.
01
Increase out-of-cage time
Most parrots need minimum 3β4 hours out of cage daily. Many behavioural issues resolve when this is met.
02
Ignore the screaming
The moment it stops, immediately give attention and praise. Teach that quiet = good things.
03
Reward quiet behaviour
When your bird is playing quietly, go to them, praise them, give a treat.
04
Enrich the environment
Rotate toys, provide foraging activities, play bird-safe music when you're away.
