Birds are intelligent, social, and deeply rewarding pets β but they have specific needs very different from dogs and cats.
Choosing Your First Bird
- Budgerigar (Budgie): Best starter bird. Gentle, easy to tame. Talks with training.
- Cockatiel: Very affectionate, excellent whistler. Ideal for families.
- Lovebird: Small but feisty. Bonds strongly with one person.
- Canary/Finch: Beautiful singers. Better for watching than handling.
Setting Up the Cage
The cage should be as large as possible. Place away from direct sunlight, drafts, kitchens (cooking fumes are toxic), and televisions.
Diet Basics
Seeds alone are insufficient β they're high in fat. A proper bird diet: 50% pellets, 30% fresh vegetables and fruit, 20% seeds as treats.
Avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, onion, garlic, and non-stick pan fumes (PTFE/Teflon) can be fatal to birds.
Let your bird get used to you. Talk softly, offer treats through the bars.
Offer a treat from your flat palm. When they step on voluntarily, bonding has begun.
30+ minutes of out-of-cage time daily. Talk to them constantly.
