The cage is your bird's entire world when you're not home. Getting size, bar spacing, and placement wrong is one of the most common mistakes new bird owners make.
Minimum Cage Sizes
- Budgie/Parakeet: 45×45×60cm minimum
- Cockatiel: 60×60×90cm minimum
- Lovebird: 45×45×60cm. Always keep in pairs.
- African Grey/Amazon: 90×60×120cm absolute minimum
- Macaw: 120×90×150cm

Round cages look beautiful but are harmful. Birds need corners to feel secure. Always choose rectangular cages.
Bar Spacing — Critical Safety
- Finches, Canaries: 0.6–1cm
- Budgies: 1–1.2cm
- Cockatiels: 1.2–1.5cm
- Large Parrots: 2–2.5cm
Cage Placement Rules
- Never in the kitchen — cooking fumes are lethal
- At eye level or above — birds feel vulnerable when looked down upon
- Against one wall — gives a sense of security
- Away from air conditioning vents and windows
