Hamsters are often mistakenly thought of as easy starter pets. They have specific and non-negotiable needs โ but they're wonderful companions when cared for properly.
Housing: The Most Misunderstood Part
The tiny cages sold in pet shops are far too small. A Syrian hamster needs a minimum of 100ร50cm floor space. In small cages, hamsters show stress behaviours like bar chewing.
The minimum recommended cage floor size for a Syrian hamster is 100ร50cm. Use a glass tank or large plastic bin cage.
Diet
- 70โ80% quality hamster mix or lab blocks
- 10% fresh vegetables (cucumber, broccoli, carrot)
- 10% protein 2โ3 times per week (plain boiled chicken, mealworms)
- Never: citrus fruit, grapes, onion, sweet foods
Exercise: The Wheel
Hamsters run 5โ10km every night in the wild. A wheel is not optional โ it's essential. Minimum wheel diameter: 25โ28cm for Syrians.
Let your hamster settle. Talk softly near the cage.
Place your flat hand in the cage with a treat. Let them climb on voluntarily.
5โ10 minutes, close to the ground. Hamsters fall easily.
