Sheep are gentle, hardy, and remarkably low-maintenance compared to many livestock animals. Whether you're interested in wool, meat, milk or just land management, sheep are a rewarding choice.
Popular Sheep Breeds in India
- Merino: World's finest wool. Heat-tolerant, excellent for beginners.
- Rambouillet: Similar to Merino, very adaptable.
- Deccani: Hardy native breed, good for dry regions.
- Mandya: South Indian meat breed, excellent lamb growth.
- Nellore: Large frame, good meat yield, heat-tolerant.
- Bannur: Dual purpose โ meat and wool, common in Karnataka.
Housing & Shelter
Sheep need a clean, dry shelter with good ventilation. They're hardy but vulnerable to prolonged damp conditions which cause foot rot and respiratory disease.
- Allow 12โ15 square feet per sheep indoors
- Use slatted floors or deep dry bedding
- Ensure shade in summer โ sheep are susceptible to heat stress
- Provide a separate lambing pen, well-bedded with clean straw
Nutrition
Sheep are true grazers and should have access to quality pasture or hay at all times. Good pasture management is the foundation of a healthy flock.
- Pasture or hay: Primary diet โ 2โ3kg per sheep per day
- Concentrates: Add for pregnant/lactating ewes and growing lambs
- Salt blocks: Essential โ sheep need additional sodium
- Clean water: 2โ4 litres per sheep per day, more in hot weather
- Avoid: Brassica plants in excess, bracken fern, azalea, rhododendron
Healthcare Essentials
Annual Clostridial vaccines (Heptavac or equivalent). Discuss a full programme with your vet based on your region.
Check feet every 4โ6 weeks. Trim overgrown hoof and treat any signs of foot rot with zinc sulphate foot bath.
Test faecal egg counts before treating โ overuse of drenches creates drug resistance. Use targeted selective treatment.
Wool breeds must be shorn once a year (spring). Unshorn sheep suffer from flystrike (blowfly maggots) and heat stress.
Provide a clean lambing pen, ensure the lamb suckles within the first hour (colostrum is critical), identify and assist any ewes in difficulty.
Signs of a Healthy Sheep
- Bright eyes with no discharge
- Active and alert โ not separating from the flock
- Good body condition (feel the ribs โ not too prominent, not buried in fat)
- Clean, dry fleece without bare patches
- Eating and drinking normally
- Firm droppings โ loose droppings indicate a health issue
Flystrike kills sheep rapidly. Check your flock daily in warm weather, especially around the tail. Treat immediately and consult a vet.
