A hissing cat is not being mean โ they're scared, in pain, or overwhelmed. Understanding the hiss is the first step to helping your cat feel safe.
What Hissing Means
Hissing is a defensive warning โ your cat is saying 'back off, I feel threatened'. It's almost always a sign of fear, not aggression.
Types of Feline Aggression
The most common type. Cat is cornered, surprised, or overwhelmed. Back away, give space.
If your usually gentle cat suddenly hisses when touched, have them examined by a vet.
Cats have a tolerance threshold. Watch for tail flicking or ears rotating back โ these mean 'stop now'.
Your cat sees a cat outside, can't reach it, and redirects frustration at you. Leave them alone until calm.
When a cat shows any stress signal, always increase distance first. Never try to comfort a hissing cat by approaching.
